Shoot for Color

Shoot for Color is a participatory practice that explores the city through color, attention, and careful looking.

The project consists of actions, photo marathons, and individual walks. It treats color not as decoration but as a way to pay attention to the city and inhabit it more fully.

It is a shared activity without competition. Participants create a personal experience of the city where perception itself becomes the medium.

Within Anatomy of Cities, Shoot for Color works as a visual and color-based instrument.

On a grey winter day, when the city seems drained of color, it becomes the perfect moment to go hunting for it. The rarer the hues, the sharper the eye becomes. Shoot for Color turns the city into a field of quiet discoveries.

Each participant of the photo marathon chose a color and set out to hunt it on the streets of the city.

A one-day photo marathon across Yekaterinburg invited participants to follow a shared route while each pursued a personal color through the city’s streets. Walking together yet apart, they searched for shades of their chosen hue until the city itself turned into a living palette.

The artist duo R² first invented the format of a photo marathon in 2004, when they launched their first Color Hunting actions. They spent entire days walking through the city, trying to capture colors and their subtle shades. Later they sorted the photographs into folders by hue, creating an unexpected portrait of the city through its colors and time.
